The Characterisation Word Mat is a child-friendly resource that can be used to improve fictional writing. This has been pitched at upper KS2 but would be suitable for younger age groups too.

The word mat has been carefully organised into sections based on a character’s behaviour, making it super easy for children to use in their up-level their writing! You can expect to find a variety of ‘show, not tell’ adverbials, movement verbs, adverbs as well as an enormous list of synonyms to replace the words ‘said’, ‘walked’ and ‘ran’. I have found this particularly useful for my Year 6s in reaching the Expected Standard in the five years that I have taught the year group; I hope you find it useful too!
