Rich, decorative and wonderfully tactile, this engaging art lesson introduces pupils to the golden world of Gustav Klimt. Inspired by The Tree of Life, learners explore pattern, symbolism, spirals and gold detail while constructing a striking 3D layered collage.

Klimt’s Golden Phase is known for shimmering gold, repeated shapes and symbolic imagery .
In this session, pupils apply these ideas to their own work, building dimension through curled paper strips and decorative surfaces.

Pupils will:

  • Explore how repetition and line create movement
  • Create a layered collage inspired by The Tree of Life
  • Use paper strips to build 3D curls and flowing branches
  • Make creative choices using contrast, decorative detail and balance
  • Reflect on how symbols communicate meaning in art

  • Student-friendly Gustav Klimt info sheet
  • Full visual instructions for constructing and curling branches
