This was written with the National 5 English course in mind, specifically the Scottish Set Text part of the Critical Reading paper, but could be used by anyone studying the six featured Kay poems:

  • Whilst Leila Sleeps
  • Maw Broon Visits a Therapist
  • Keeping Orchids
  • Grandpa’s Soup
  • Gap Year
  • Darling

The resource condenses all the essential knowledge needed, but it will be especially helpful for students when revising the poems or constructing a response to the 8 marker commonality question.

The resource contains:

  • a brief bio of Jackie Kay
  • a summary, key quotations and stylistic features for each of the set poems
  • a commonality grid (focusing on themes).
