This lesson focuses on the dramatic demographic changes that took place during the period.

Students investigate why Britain’s population grew so rapidly and explore the factors that contributed to these changes.

The lesson begins with a fast-paced “What’s Behind the Boxes?” starter activity, designed to engage students and stimulate curiosity. This is followed by a true or false quiz, where students use a clue mat to test and develop their understanding of population growth and change.

Students are then given a character card representing a person from the period. Through analysing their character’s experiences and circumstances, they consider how different groups contributed to, and were affected by, the changing population of Britain.

A range of learning activities enables students to explain the causes and consequences of population change, including opportunities for discussion, analysis and an extended writing task. Structured support and guidance are provided where required, ensuring accessibility for all learners while maintaining appropriate challenge.

To conclude, students evaluate the different reactions people may have had to these demographic changes and justify their views using evidence gathered throughout the lesson.

The lesson is built around a central enquiry question, introduced through a visual lightbulb challenge at the start and revisited at the end. This allows students to reflect on and demonstrate the progress they have made in answering the key question.
