Twelve paintings dating from the industrial age (plus crib sheet with title, artist and date of completion).

Pupils need to put the paintings in chronological order in terms of which stage of industrialisation is being depicted.

NB: There is no obvious order, which should open up discussion.

TIPS:

• Print and laminate;
• Divide class into groups;
• Split paintings amongst groups;
• Merge groups until class order completed;
• Discuss the challenges of completing the task;
