What’s inside?

Purpose of the G4 Project – Develops collaborative research skills, appreciation of interdisciplinary approaches to real-world problems, and understanding of science as a collaborative enterprise. One full school day (6–8 hours) plus preparation.

IB requirements – Compulsory for ALL Diploma science students. Must include planning, action/investigation, and presentation phases. Teacher confirms completion. Recorded in CAS portfolio (Activity strand).

Recommended theme: WATER – Connects all Group 4 sciences naturally. Biology (osmosis, transpiration, aquatic ecology, water quality). Chemistry (pH, dissolved oxygen, pollutants). Physics (surface tension, specific heat capacity, fluid dynamics). ESS (water cycle, scarcity, watershed management). CS (sensor networks, flood modelling).

Alternative themes – Energy, Food, Climate Change, Human Health.

G4 day programme – Full schedule from 08:00 to 16:00. Includes theme introduction, cross-subject group formation, action/investigation phase (4–6 hours), presentation preparation, and group presentations. Biology teacher roles specified.

Biology investigation options (Water theme) – A3: pH effect on mung bean germination (B4.1 tolerance ranges). B1: Macroinvertebrate kick net sampling; Biotic Index calculation (B4.2 indicator species). C2: Transpiration rates in different plant species using potometer (B3.1 gas exchange). D1: Onion plasmolysis at different NaCl concentrations (B2.1 osmosis). E3: Elodea O₂ production in water from different sources (C1.3 photosynthesis limiting factors).

NOS connections – Science as a collaborative and interdisciplinary enterprise. Peer collaboration and knowledge construction. Data from multiple sources and triangulation. Science and social responsibility.

ATL skills – Social skills (primary focus; cross-disciplinary communication). Communication skills (interdisciplinary audience). Thinking skills (causal integration across disciplines). Self-management skills (fixed timeline; 11:00 check-in).
