This IB Maths AA SL Topic 3.1 – Introduction to 3D Geometry resource introduces students to key geometric calculations in three-dimensional space. It begins by extending the familiar two-dimensional distance formula to three dimensions, helping students calculate the distance and midpoint between two points. Students then review the surface area and volume formulas for common solids, including hemispheres, right pyramids, right cones, spheres, and rectangular prisms, with attention given to selecting the correct dimensions and including all required surfaces.

The lesson develops students’ ability to apply these formulas in multi-step contextual problems involving composite calculations, unit conversions, slant heights, triangular faces, and real-world objects. It also introduces angles in three-dimensional geometry, including the angle between two lines using direction vectors and the angle between a line and a plane using the plane’s normal vector. With clear formula summaries, labelled diagrams, worked examples, applied practice questions, vector methods, and fully worked solutions, this resource helps SL students build confidence with three-dimensional geometry in line with IB Mathematics AA expectations.
