This fully scripted 60-minute IB DP Theory of Knowledge (TOK) lesson explores how algorithms shape what people know and how digital platforms influence the information environment students live in every day. It asks what happens when information is selected for engagement and relevance rather than for truth, balance, or importance.

The lesson begins by asking students to map their own information diet from the last 24 hours. This helps them see how much of what they encounter is already being selected by algorithms rather than chosen directly. It then introduces three key ideas: engagement optimisation, personalisation, and feedback loops.

The first main task is The Search Experiment. Students compare the results of the same search across different users or platforms and consider why the results are not identical. This helps make personalisation visible and raises questions about whether users are all accessing the same body of knowledge online.

The second main task is Platform Audit. Students examine platforms such as YouTube, Google Search, and social media news feeds to identify what each one is designed to optimise, what kinds of content each one amplifies, what gets suppressed, and who controls those design decisions. This gives students a practical way to think about how information architecture shapes knowledge.

The lesson also includes a structured debate on whether filter bubbles are making people epistemically worse off, or whether the concern is sometimes overstated. Students consider both the personal and the structural side of the issue, including the role of private companies in shaping public knowledge.

IB DP Theory of Knowledge (TOK): 19 Lesson Bundle - Part 2 - 2026

This bundle contains another 19 lessons covering the Areas of Knowledge and optional themes of the IB DP Theory of Knowledge course. There are multiple valid ways to sequence and teach these topics. This is not an exhaustive curriculum. Possible sequence and rationale This bundle picks up where the first 20 lessons left off, completing the Natural Sciences AOK before moving through Mathematics, History, Human Sciences, Ethics, Technology, Politics, the Arts, and Religious and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. The AOKs are ordered to build on each other: Natural Sciences and Mathematics sit together because both deal with formal knowledge and certainty, making comparison straightforward. Ethics comes next because the Human Sciences lessons, particularly the conformity material, lead naturally into questions of moral knowledge. The Technology and Politics optional themes close the AOK sequence because students are by then equipped to apply everything they have learned to the most current and contested knowledge contexts. The Arts and Religious and Indigenous Knowledge Systems sit last as a deliberate broadening; they challenge students to question the assumptions about knowledge they have built up across the rest of the course.
