AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to question preconceived ideas of Henry being a strong and successful King.

Through a range of carefully structured activities, students analyse video clips, source material and historical interpretations to judge how strong and effective Henry really was as king. They will also explore the Tudor family tree to understand why Henry’s claim to the throne may have appeared more secure and legitimate than that of his father, Henry VII.

Students develop their analytical and evaluative skills through multiple-choice questioning, source analysis and interpretation work, including the study of two contrasting historical views of Henry’s kingship and personality.

A missing-word plenary activity helps reinforce key learning about his accession to the throne, while the enquiry question running throughout the lesson encourages students to track and reflect on their progress across both the lesson and wider unit of study.

The lesson includes:
video analysis, source work, interpretation tasks and multiple-choice questioning
discussion and challenge
exploration of the Tudor family tree and Henry’s claim to the throne
source analysis using contrasting historical interpretations and model answers
differentiated with suggested teaching strategies included
fully editable PowerPoint format for easy adaptation
