AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the success of Henry’s foreign policy after Wolsey.

Students begin by recapping the key events leading up to the Battle of Pavia and the rise of Charles V as the dominant power in Europe.

The lesson also examines how Henry VIII adapted his foreign policy during the divorce crisis before returning to aggressive military ambitions in pursuit of prestige, power and dynastic honour.

Students investigate and evaluate Henry’s relationships and campaigns involving France, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, including the Rough Wooing and The Holy Roman Empire

Through discussion, evidence-based activities and evaluative tasks, students build a detailed judgement on the success of Henry’s pursuit of glory and international influence. The lesson encourages students to support arguments with precise factual knowledge and historical examples to prepare for higher-level exam responses.

Exam question practice is included, with structured support including writing frames, prompts, a model answer and a mark scheme to help students develop analytical and evaluative writing skills with confidence.
