AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to assess the impact of humanism and the arts on Henry VIII.

While often described as the ‘Renaissance Prince’, students are encouraged to critically evaluate how far this reputation is deserved through evidence-based analysis and exam-style practice.

Students begin with a clear recap of Renaissance ideas and key humanist thinkers including Desiderius Erasmus, John Colet and Thomas More. Carefully selected podcast and video links help deepen understanding of Renaissance beliefs and values.

The lesson moves into an investigation of how far Henry VIII adopted humanist ideals, focusing on developments in education, art, portraiture, tapestries and music. Students are encouraged to build and justify arguments before applying their knowledge to an exam question, supported by guidance, a model answer and a mark scheme.

A multiple-choice plenary activity is included to reinforce learning and check understanding, while an overarching enquiry question is revisited throughout to demonstrate progress and encourage deeper historical thinking.
