AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

This lesson investigates the early challenges faced by Henry VIII as he began his reign, encouraging students to assess the seriousness and significance of the problems confronting the new Tudor monarch.

Students prioritise a range of issues, including marriage, war with France and reform of the Church, before deciding whether these challenges were short-term or long-term in nature.

Through structured reading and note-taking activities, students categorise information linked to key themes such as foreign policy and war, dynastic security, relations with the nobility, religious concerns and the influence of ministers inherited from Henry VII.

Video analysis provides valuable historical context and helps students understand the atmosphere surrounding the beginning of Henry’s reign.

The lesson also includes source-based exam practice using two contrasting interpretations of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne. A structured writing frame and introductory model answer are provided to support students in developing analytical and evaluative skills with confidence. An enquiry question introduced at the start of the lesson is revisited throughout to reinforce progress and support learning across the wider unit of work.

This lesson therefore includes:
Short- and long-term issues of Henry VIII’s early years

Foreign policy, dynastic security, religion and the nobility
Source-based exam practice with writing frame and model answer included
An enquiry question revisited throughout to support progress and deeper thinking
