The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the character, motives and leadership of Henry VII as he established the Tudor dynasty following the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Students investigate the challenges facing the new king, including marriage, finance, securing loyalty, dealing with rivals, choosing advisers and defeating pretenders to the throne. Through six decision-making activities, they judge the options available to Henry before evaluating how effectively and ruthlessly he consolidated his power.

Using criteria introduced at the start of the lesson, students decide whether Henry ruled through fear and intimidation or whether his actions were necessary to secure a fragile kingdom. They present their conclusions in a structured, differentiated extended writing task supported by writing frames and success criteria.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, enabling students to track their progress and deepen their understanding of how Henry VII secured the Tudor throne.
