AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

How did Henry VII use propaganda to secure his throne and strengthen Tudor authority?

This lesson encourages students to investigate, analyse and evaluate the different ways Henry VII used propaganda to cement his hold on power after the Wars of the Roses. Through a range of carefully selected historical sources and engaging activities, students explore how image, symbolism and messaging were used to influence public opinion and reinforce legitimacy.

Students examine a variety of propaganda examples and identify:
the methods of propaganda being used
the symbolism and hidden messages conveyed
the intended audience
how effective these methods were in strengthening Henry VII’s position

Students are also challenged to evaluate the overall success of Tudor propaganda and consider whether controlling public opinion was enough to guarantee stability and loyalty.

The lesson includes:
differentiated source analysis activities
retrieval practice tasks to reinforce prior learning
structured exam practice with planning support and a model answer
suggested themes and guidance for weaker students
a generic mark scheme to support assessment and feedback
an interactive plenary linking key lesson knowledge to number prompts
Fully editable PowerPoint lesson
