This is a modular unit that can be tailored to suit two to four weeks of class time and different levels of student ability. The unit is intended as an in-depth course, with full explanatory instruction for self-directed learning, enabling students to work at their own pace, or to follow a programme of teacher-centred whole class instruction.

Unit is in five modules. All work is embedded in powerpoint form, with numbered slides, exemplars for all writing tasks,places on slides to enter responses, visual stimulus, exemplar haiku, and first line starters to assist student composition. The activities cover a range of Individual and group work. There is a culminating assessment module that can be used for formal or informal assessment, and an extension activities module for advanced students or fast finishers.

Module One – Essential Knowledge

**Module Two **– Refining and advancing Knowledge
(i) Clarity & brevity in language choices (ii) use of visual & sound devices (iii) the ‘A Ha’ principle (iv) Paragraph writing - evaluating, comparing, contrasting
Module Three
Individual Practice Writing Tasks (Five tasks – (i) haiku of the seasons (ii) haiku and the five senses,(iii) haiku and wonder, (iv) haiku and contrasts (v) haiku and paradox
Module Four - Collaborative Analysis and Group Practice Writing Tasks (i) group reading out loud (ii) evaluating and ranking humorous haiku (iii) writing and sharing self-written haiku (iv) peer group marking using evaluation criteria (v) writing a peer appreciation in haiku
Module Five - Haiku Writing Class Task - The World of Childhood (assessment project) – student generated haiku portfolio based on themes and visual stimulus –Childhood innocence, family, pets, fun, changes
**Module Six **- Extension Activities : Personal Responses to Stimulus & exemplars
(i) Moods and Emotions (ii) Creating a Haiku sequence (iii) Haiku enquiry & reflection
