Help your Grade 8 students master central ideas the way RI.8.2 actually demands it: not just determining a central idea and tracing its development, but analyzing its relationship to the supporting ideas - how each supporting idea develops, extends, or complicates the central idea. This complete unit takes students from telling a topic from a central idea, through identifying load-bearing supporting ideas, to mapping exactly how each one relates to the central idea.

Where younger students track two or more central ideas, Grade 8 readers focus on a central idea and analyze how its supporting ideas relate to it. The keystone Central Idea Development Statement brings the central idea, its supporting ideas, the relationship of each, and the development into one analytical sentence, plus an objective summary.
