A complete 14-day Grade 5 unit covering all of CCSS 5.OA — the order of operations (PEMDAS), nested grouping symbols, writing and interpreting expressions, generating and comparing number patterns, and graphing ordered pairs on the coordinate plane.

This is the bridge from arithmetic to algebra. Built by a classroom teacher who knows that students need to MASTER PEMDAS before middle school, and that expressions and patterns set the foundation for everything that follows. From “3 + 4 × 5” to graphing patterns on a coordinate grid, every concept is built with clear scaffolding, real-world context, and the kind of step-by-step thinking Grade 5 students need.

Twelve fully-scripted lessons take students through PEMDAS, expressions, and patterns — culminating in a “Movie Night” performance task where Mia plans a school movie night and students apply EVERY 5.OA skill: writing expressions for total cost, evaluating with PEMDAS, finding rules between ticket sales and revenue, forming ordered pairs, and predicting growth.

What’s included:

  • 12 lesson decks (120 slides) — fully scripted with speaker notes
  • 12 worksheets (8 practice + 1 word problem + 2 bonus per lesson) + answer keys with misconception notes
  • 12 exit tickets (3 questions, ~5 minutes) + answer keys with reteach suggestions
  • Pre/Post Assessment — 10 questions mapped to every 5.OA sub-standard
  • Summative Performance Task — “Movie Night” (5 parts, 16 points)
  • Problem-Solving Rubric — 4 criteria x 4 levels
  • 4 Anchor Charts — wall posters for PEMDAS, expressions, patterns, and the coordinate plane
  • 14-Day Pacing Guide
  • Parent Letter (editable)

Lesson sequence:

  • Lesson 1. Order of Operations Basics (PEMDAS) (5.OA.A.1)
  • Lesson 2. Parentheses in Expressions (5.OA.A.1)
  • Lesson 3. Brackets and Braces (5.OA.A.1)
  • Lesson 4. Order of Operations Practice (5.OA.A.1)
  • Lesson 5. Writing Expressions from Words (5.OA.A.2)
  • Lesson 6. Interpreting Expressions Without Evaluating (5.OA.A.2)
  • Lesson 7. Comparing Expressions (5.OA.A.2)
  • Lesson 8. Generating Two Number Patterns (5.OA.B.3)
  • Lesson 9. Finding Relationships Between Patterns (5.OA.B.3)
  • Lesson 10. Forming Ordered Pairs (5.OA.B.3)
  • Lesson 11. Graphing Patterns on the Coordinate Plane (5.OA.B.3)
  • Lesson 12. Real-World 5.OA Synthesis (5.OA all)

Standards: 5.OA.A.1 — Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols 5.OA.A.2 — Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers; interpret expressions without evaluating them 5.OA.B.3 — Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules; identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms; form ordered pairs and graph them on a coordinate plane
