A complete KS1 lesson for Y1/Y2 on giving and checking change from Tykeoons’ MoneySmarts. Active learning throughout, differentiated for all abilities.

Join Jamal and Jasmine at the school fair to learn how to work out and check change. Using blank number lines to count on from the price to the amount paid, pupils practise calculating change from 20p, 50p and £1 before tackling the real-world skill of spotting when the change they have been given is wrong. Whiteboard activities keep the whole class engaged throughout before pupils move to the interactive simulation and independent work. Works as a standalone lesson or as part of the full MoneySmarts 4-7 series.

A strong cross-curricular link for maths: number lines, counting on and working with coins are all central to the lesson and directly support the KS1 maths curriculum.

Want a complete financial education solution for your school? MoneySmarts 4-7 is part of the Tykeoons primary financial education platform, containing hundreds of resources like this one.

This resource contains:

  • A teacher presentation deck with built-in whiteboard activities and discussion prompts throughout
  • A whole-class interactive simulation (working out the correct change in a buying scenario)
