This lesson supports students in writing a clear, convincing letter for a specific audience and purpose. The focus is on tone, structure and control, with clear modelling and scaffolded tasks to help students develop a confident, formal style of writing.

Students explore how letters are used to complain, persuade or raise concerns, and how language choices change depending on audience. The lesson teaches students how to open a letter clearly, develop an argument across paragraphs and end with a strong, purposeful request or judgement. Key vocabulary is embedded throughout, with opportunities for students to practise sentence-level control before completing an extended piece of writing.

The resource includes a PowerPoint, student worksheet, planning structure, model letter and clear success criteria. It is suitable for KS4 mixed-ability classes and can be used as a standalone lesson or as part of a transactional writing unit.
