This is Part 1 of the GCSE Biology Required Practical series: Preparing a Microscope Slide. (Highly Inclusive)

This fully resourced lesson guides students step-by-step through the correct method of preparing a temporary microscope slide of plant cells, building both procedural knowledge and exam understanding.

The lesson begins with a Do Now retrieval task on plant and animal cells, helping students activate prior knowledge before linking to the practical.

Students are then introduced to all equipment required using a dual-coded approach, with clear images alongside each piece of apparatus to support visual learning and accessibility.

The method is taught in a structured, step-by-step format, with each stage presented one at a time. Each step is paired with:

Clear visual representations (dual coding)
An explanation of why each step is important, developing scientific reasoning and exam technique

Throughout the lesson, students are regularly checked for understanding using built-in AFL questions, including mini whiteboard tasks designed to identify misconceptions in real time.

What’s included:
Retrieval Do Now (plant vs animal cells)
Equipment list with images (dual coding)
Step-by-step slide preparation method
Explanation of scientific reasoning at each stage
