Fuel cells A level Chemistry. Hydrogen fuel cell. Hydrogen oxygen fuel cells can operate in acidic or alkaline conditions? Direct methanol fuel cell? All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 13 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 5 – WCH15, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. The breakdown of the slides (which are best opened on Microsoft PowerPoint) is as follows:

Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time.

Slide 3 – use this slide to explain to students the two ways that hydrogen can be used as a fuel in cars
Slides 4 – 6: a labelled diagram of a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell in acidic conditions. Print slides 5 and 6 as two slides per page for your students.
Slide 7 – the half equations involved in this type of fuel cell
Slides 8 – 10: this section explains in clear notes how the hydrogen-oxygen acidic fuel cell works. The notes appear in small chunks as you click
Slide 11 – an image of actual fuel cell
Slide 12 – an embedded YouTube video showing a fuel cell being used to power a fan
Slides 13 – 15: a labelled diagram of a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell in alkaline conditions. Print slides 14 and 15 as two slides per page for your students.
Slides 16 – 17: these slides explains the half equations involved in this type of fuel cell, and also has a memory cue to help students remember
Slide 18 – explains how the fuel cell works
Slide 19 – a labelled diagram showing a direct methanol fuel cell, as students must know that there are other types
Slide 20 – a short YouTube video (embedded, of course) produced by the American Chemical Society, in which a professor explains, in simple terms, how the direct methanol fuel cell works
Slide 21 – a research task in which students should chose one of the types of fuel cells listed, carry out some research to find the answers the questions and present back to the class
Slides 22 – 26: advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen fuel cells. All the points appear in sequence as you click. I have also included steam reforming and the water-gas shift reaction, so students can better appreciate how the production of hydrogen is inextricably linked to carbon dioxide emission
Slides 27 – 28: potential solutions to the problems associated with hydrogen fuel cells
Slide 29 - learning pit stop questions to test students’ understanding so far. Answers animate on the screen when you click
Slides 30 – 35: exam questions with mark scheme answers included with this resource
