Year 6 French Transition Lesson: Je voudrais une glace

A ready-to-use French transition lesson designed for Year 6 pupils visiting secondary school before September.

This 55-minute lesson introduces students to French in a fun, accessible and confidence-building way through the topic of ordering an ice cream. It assumes no prior knowledge of French and is ideal for giving Year 6 students a positive first taste of what MFL lessons are like at secondary school.

Students will learn to recognise familiar ice cream flavours, practise key vocabulary, understand simple French sentences and build towards saying their own ice cream order using:

Je voudrais une glace…

The lesson includes a range of low-stakes activities to support engagement and participation, including:

  • a ready-to-learn recognition starter
  • clear vocabulary slides with pronunciation support
  • reading multiple-choice questions
  • sentence bingo
  • Tennis fou speaking practice
  • a “Find someone who…” class survey
  • a short writing task using picture prompts
  • a fun plenary where students stand up and order their chosen flavour

This resource is designed to feel light, welcoming and achievable, while still giving students a real sense of success by the end of the lesson.

Perfect for Year 6 transition days, induction lessons, taster sessions or any beginner French group.
