Students begin by travelling back millions of years to understand how coal, oil and gas were formed from ancient forests, oceans and microscopic organisms. This narrative approach helps them visualise Earth as a changing, living system shaped by deep time.

They then identify the role of high pressure and temperature in transforming dead organic matter into the fossil fuels we rely on today. This section builds strong scientific understanding of geological processes.

Next, pupils define what it means for a resource to be non‑renewable and explore why fossil fuels cannot be replaced on human timescales. This leads into thoughtful discussion about sustainability and future energy choices.

Finally, using real or modelled data, students compare the efficiency of different fuels to evaluate which fuels release the most energy and how this affects their use in homes, transport and industry. This analytical task strengthens numeracy, interpretation and scientific reasoning.
