This lesson is the first lesson in the GCSE Chemistry topic “Chemical Analysis” (AQA GCSE Chemistry - 4.8.1.1 Pure substances & 4.8.1.2 Formulations)

In this lesson students will learn what the differences are between the words pure in everyday language and its meaning in chemistry, as well as how to identify mixtures from melting point data, and what a formulation is.

This lesson is relevant and suitable for students studying AQA GCSE Chemistry and AQA GCSE Combined Science.

Lesson objectives:

  • State what a “pure substance” and “formulation” are in chemistry
  • Explain how a pure substance in chemistry is different to “pure” in everyday language
  • Give examples of formulations
  • Identify pure substances and mixtures using melting/boiling point data
