This fully resourced two-week explanation writing unit explores the topic Forces Around Us. Pupils will learn how different forces—such as gravity, friction, air resistance, and upthrust—affect the movement of objects in everyday life. Using a structured and supportive approach, pupils will develop the skills to write clear, scientifically accurate explanation texts.

Designed with Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction in mind, each lesson provides explicit modelling, guided practice, and opportunities for independent writing. The unit integrates science and literacy, helping pupils deepen their understanding of forces while improving explanation writing outcomes.

This pack includes:

  • 10 detailed lessons with clear learning objectives and teacher modelling
  • A two-page WAGOLL (model text) with annotated teacher notes
  • Over 110 editable teaching slides
  • 17 pupil worksheets aligned with each stage of the writing proces
  • Sentence stems, writing scaffolds, and success criteria
  • Grammar focus: conjunctions, fronted adverbials, and expanded noun phrases
  • Audio version of the WAGOLL for accessibility and EAL learners
  • Dyslexia-friendly font and layout
  • Quizzes, retrieval tasks, and assessment tools included

This unit is ideal for upper KS2 pupils studying forces in science, and is perfect for whole-class teaching, small group support, or independent explanation writing. It supports writing across the curriculum while reinforcing scientific knowledge through purposeful, engaging tasks.
