This complete lesson is fully resourced, with a set of slides and worksheet. All tasks are explained on the slides and the material can be delivered by a non-specialist. It explores the stock characters in folk stories. Students will identify these archetypal characters, design costume and role on the wall for one of them and then undertake a creative writing task based on their chosen character. As an extension task, students will look at how these characters can be subverted by looking at their use in the film Shrek.
There is opportunity for a video clip; I used the trailer from the film Into the Woods but there are lots of other options. Other images do not have copyright issues attached to them.
This lesson will work well for both Drama or English and is aimed at KS3 students.
