English sports journalism club interview writing and planning lesson. Engage secondary students with non-fiction writing through their interest in sport (such as football, soccer, rugby, tennis, cricket).

In this non-fiction writing lesson, students use look at an example interview to explore introductions and conclusions, and how to link between different quotations/quotes from their interviewees/atheletes. Students then analyse a model interview article with a famous athlete to see how a writer merges quotations with their own opinions and links between ideas.

Students reduce down their transcripts of their interviews to summaries of five to ten key ideas. This is then reduced into a one sentence summary, so students have a clear focus and purpose for their article.

Students use these notes to write out their own introductions and conclusions and use a different planning sheet (provided in the PowerPoint) to plan out their interview articles, before writing out their pieces via success criteria and peer assessment.

This exciting resource for KS3 and KS4 students could be used for an after school or lunch time club, with students exploring non-fiction writing and combining their love of sports with English learning.

Throughout the club sessions, we will be covering opinion pieces, reports, match reports, preview articles, interviews and more.

The club provides exciting opportunities for cross-curricular links, through English, PE, Physical Education, Computing, IT, other clubs and more.

Students could also use their writing as part of a school newspaper, newsletter, blog or magazine.
