The aim of this lesson is to introduce students to Elizabeth I, explore the challenges she faced on becoming Queen in 1558 and develop the source analysis skills required for the AQA GCSE examination.

Students begin by testing their prior knowledge through a true or false quiz before analysing historical sources, video clips and portraits of Queen Elizabeth I.

They investigate the dramatic events of Elizabeth’s early life, including the influence of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and the uncertainty surrounding the Tudor succession, before considering how these experiences shaped her style of government.

The lesson then focuses on the early challenges of Elizabeth’s reign, including religious division, financial problems, foreign threats, marriage, succession and her legitimacy. Through a differentiated tree activity, students plot, explain and prioritise the most significant problems facing the new Queen, developing their understanding of causation and significance.

Students also receive a clear introduction to the AQA GCSE Elizabethan England course, including the assessment objectives and the four GCSE question types. The lesson concludes with a structured 12-mark source usefulness question, complete with guidance, exam tips and model techniques to build confidence for the examination.

Fully planned and ready to teach, the lesson develops historical enquiry, source analysis, interpretation, causation and evaluative writing.

AQA GCSE Elizabethan England Lessons and Resources Bundle

This bundle is the first part in a series of lessons I have created for AQA GCSE 9-1 Elizabethan England 1568-1603. Having taught this unit for a number of years, I have tweaked the order of lessons I now teach at the beginning. As well as teaching Elizabeth I's court, government and parliament, I have included Elizabeth’s favourites and an introduction to the religious settlement (which are offered as free lessons), as I felt students were getting confused without these aspects of the course being referred to early on. The theme throughout this bundle of lessons is to examine how Elizabeth tried to assert her authority and control in the first half of her reign. The lessons contain different tasks to challenge the students and are differentiated. Furthermore each lesson focuses on how to answer a GCSE practice question from the exam, notably in this unit a source, write an account and significance question.
