AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is examine the challenges facing Elizabeth I at the very start of her reign.

Students investigate the type of monarch Elizabeth promised to be and assess how effectively she dealt with the serious political, religious, and personal challenges she inherited in 1558. The lesson encourages comparison with her sister, Mary I, helping students understand why Elizabeth’s accession was so significant.

Students also examine the key individuals who influenced Elizabeth during her early years and debate the extent of their importance through ranking and discussion activities. A range of tasks promotes critical thinking, source analysis, and independent judgement throughout the lesson.

A knowledge quiz is included to check understanding, while a flashcard plenary encourages students to categorise and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Elizabeth’s early monarchy. The lesson also contains a more challenging homework task in which students support and challenge an interpretation of Elizabeth’s character, helping to build higher-level historical thinking and exam skills.

An enquiry question is introduced at the beginning of the lesson and revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress and build a deeper understanding across the wider unit of work.
