AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

This lesson is focused on the debate surrounding the “Mid Tudor Crisis.”

Students analyse and evaluate the arguments of historian Whitney R. D. Jones alongside the contemporary views of Armigall Waad to decide which interpretation is more convincing.

This lesson develops students’ ability to interpret historical evidence, assess provenance, and build supported judgements.

Students explore the political, religious, economic, and foreign policy problems inherited by Elizabeth in 1558 and consider whether England was truly in crisis at the point of her accession.

Activities encourage discussion, source analysis, debate, and extended writing, helping students strengthen both their historical knowledge and analytical skills. Students examine issues such as inflation, factional rivalry, rebellions, succession problems, and religious division before reaching their own conclusions about the state of Tudor England.

The lesson is fully resourced, differentiated, and designed to encourage high-level thinking and independent judgement.
