This lesson is the second lesson in the GCSE Chemistry topic “Rate and Extent 2” (AQA GCSE Chemistry - 4.6.2.4 The effect of changing conditions on equilibrium (HT only), and 4.6.2.5 The effect of changing concentration (HT only))

This lesson is relevant and suitable for students studying AQA GCSE Chemistry and AQA GCSE Combined Science higher tier papers ONLY.

In this lesson students will learn how an equilibrium position can be affected by changes in reactant or product concentrations. They will learn how to identify the shifts in equilibrium as well as describe these changes accurately and using correct vocabulary. Students will also practice this skill by explaining observable colour changes in equilibria as concentrations are altered.

This lesson resource contains models and comparisons to make this very difficult concept more visual. This lesson contains demonstration and mini-practical opportinities for students, as well as video and animation alternatives. This lesson is also suitable for students who may be distance learning.

Lesson objectives:

  • Understand what Le Chatelier’s Principle is
  • Predict and describe the effects of changing concentration on equilibria using Le Chatelier’s Principle

Resource contains:

  • Lesson Powerpoint (pptx.)

Lesson contains:

  • Interactive powerpoint including teacher delivery notes and answers throughout
  • Explicit teaching of key vocabulary
  • Writing frameworks
  • Animations and modelling comprehension aids
  • AFL activities (I do, we do, you do; think, pair, share; and mini-whiteboard activities)
  • Past exam question practice, along with mark schemes (and examiners reports where available)
  • Stretch and challenge tasks throughout
