A fully resourced practical lesson for Core Practical 1, specifically tailored to the Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Subsidiary Biology specification.

This lesson enables students to carry out a semi-quantitative investigation to estimate the concentration of reducing sugars using colour standards. It is designed to follow the accompanying planning lesson and gives students the opportunity to apply their understanding of Benedict’s test, dilutions and practical methodology.

The lesson focuses on:

  • Distinguishing between reducing and non-reducing sugars
  • Reviewing the difference between quantitative and semi-quantitative methods
  • Carrying out the Core Practical 1 method safely and accurately
  • Using known colour standards to estimate the concentration of reducing sugar in an unknown sample
  • Recording results in an appropriate format
  • Analysing practical data
  • Drawing a valid conclusion from the results
  • Students are prompted to check their equipment, read the full method before beginning and follow each stage carefully. The lesson also reinforces the importance of seeking clarification when practical instructions are unclear, supporting safe and independent laboratory work.
  • The resource includes:
  • Clear lesson learning outcomes
  • Practical preparation and equipment checks
  • Step-by-step practical guidance
  • Opportunities to record and analyse results
  • Support for formulating a conclusion
  • Follow-up and exam-style homework questions
  • Content matched to Edexcel IAL Core Practical 1

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to carry out the required practical method, use colour standards to make a semi-quantitative estimate and analyse their findings to reach an appropriate conclusion.

Suitable for Edexcel IAS Biology practical work, classroom teaching, laboratory preparation, revision or delivery alongside the Core Practical 1 student sheet.
