A ready-to-use GCSE Chemistry practical worksheet on rates of reaction: changing the surface area for Edexcel Combined Science (CC14 Rates of Reaction). Includes the aim, “what should I know after this practical?” objectives, a full method with labelled diagrams, a results table and scaffolded exam-style questions.

Students vary the surface area of marble chips reacting with hydrochloric acid and measure the gas given off, including why a gas syringe gives more accurate readings.

Supplied as an editable PowerPoint, in the same format as my KS3 practical booklets, so students meet the same layout from Year 7 through to GCSE. With the full method on the sheet, any non-specialist in the department can run the practical confidently.

What’s included: the aim and “what should I know” objectives, space to identify the variables, scaffolded questions and an extension task for higher attainers.

The PowerPoint is fully editable, so you can reword the questions, change the quantities to match the equipment in your prep room, or drop your own diagrams in.

Apparatus used: measuring cylinder, gas syringe, stopwatch, syringe, marble chips, hydrochloric acid.

How I use it: students complete the sheet during the practical and keep it for revision, which gives them a written record to revise from when practical questions come up in the exam. It prints cleanly double-sided on A4.

The layout matches my KS3 practical booklets (/teaching-resource/resource-13516197), so students arriving from Year 9 already know how the sheets work.

GCSE Chemistry Core Practicals: Edexcel Bundle (10 Worksheets)

A ready-to-use bundle of 10 GCSE Chemistry practical worksheets for Edexcel Combined Science, covering the chemistry core practicals plus two further important practicals, each with a full method, results table and exam-style questions. Practicals included: * Investigating inks - chromatography (CC2) * Preparing pure, dry crystals of a soluble salt (CC8) * Preparing insoluble salts by precipitation (CC8) * Investigating neutralisation (CC8) * Electrolysis with copper and with inert electrodes (CC10) * Halogen displacement reactions (CC13) * Rates of reaction - changing the concentration (CC14) * Rates of reaction - changing the surface area (CC14) * Rates of reaction - changing the temperature (CC14) * Exothermic and endothermic reactions (CC15) Every practical follows the same format: the aim and "what should I know after this practical?" objectives, a step-by-step method with labelled diagrams, a results table where relevant, space to identify the variables, and scaffolded exam-style questions, with extension tasks for higher attainers. All ten are fully editable PowerPoints, so you can reword the questions, change the quantities to match the equipment in your prep room, or drop your own diagrams in. How I use it: students complete the relevant sheet during each practical lesson and keep them as a revision record, which gives them something to revise from when practical questions come up in the exam. With the full method on the sheet, any non-specialist in the department can run the practical confidently. The format matches my KS3 Science Practical Skills bundle (/teaching-resource/resource-13516197), so students arriving from Year 9 already know how the sheets work. Last updated August 2026.
