  • 15 differentiated resource sheets — Working Towards, Age-Related Expectations, and Greater Depth, with sentence frames, word banks, and writing frames.
  • Complete teacher unit plan — unit overview, key themes, model texts, full session-by-session plans, key questions, assessment focus, and vocabulary focus.
  • Child-friendly mark scheme — “I can…” success criteria for the final writing piece, ready for self- and peer-assessment.
  • 3 weekly exit tickets — 5 multiple-choice questions per week, with teacher answer keys.
Final writing outcome

A multi-stranded historical narrative linking three children across mid-twentieth-century Europe and America by a single travelling harmonica. Pupils write three braided strands that meet in a final moment, using relative clauses to introduce the layered cast, modal verbs at each strand’s crisis, parenthesis with dashes for linking asides, and time-adverbials to keep the reader oriented across decades and continents.

Grammar features (Year 5 NC-aligned)
  • Relative clauses (using who, which, that, whose, where) to add layered information about characters.
  • Modal verbs (must, might, could, should, ought to) to convey degrees of possibility and obligation in moments of crisis.
Themes explored

The harmonica as a travelling object that carries memory, Music as quiet resistance in dangerous times, Multiple strands converging across mid-twentieth-century history.

Key vocabulary

Harmonica, resistance, strand, inheritance, convergence, exile, lullaby, destiny.
