Turn revision into a fun, social, and memorable experience with Dingbats — interactive flashcards designed to help students master key terms and facts while working collaboratively. Say goodbye to solitary study sessions! These activities promote teamwork, communication, and peer assessment, transforming revision into something students genuinely enjoy. Regular use — combined with the strategies in the accompanying PowerPoint — strengthens memory recall and helps students make the vital connections needed for exam success.

These versatile flashcards are ideal as starter activities, mini plenaries, or revision games. They work brilliantly as quick warm-ups at the start of a lesson, fun wrap-ups at the end, or informal checks for understanding during revision sessions. You can also include them in revision booklets or print them onto small cards for students to keep in their pockets or envelopes for independent practice.

When you download this resource, you’ll receive a Word document containing Dingbats for the Age of Exploration, as well as an 18-slide PowerPoint explaining how to use them effectively. The PowerPoint introduces two main games:

Game 1: One player reads key words while the other guesses the topic, strengthening retrieval skills.

Game 2: Players describe the topic without using any of the key words — a more challenging twist that encourages deeper thinking.

Additional fun and competitive ideas such as Pictionary, Charades, and other team-based games are also included. The lesson concludes with strategies for delivering a one-minute class talk and tips for creating your own Dingbats, supported by suggested homework tasks. Both documents are also provided as PDFs for easy printing and sharing.

This lesson has clear aims and objectives that link to revision and metacognition: students will learn how to use Dingbats and flashcards effectively, explore a variety of card-based games to aid learning, and evaluate which techniques work best for them. They will build confidence, collaboration, and communication skills while developing strong revision habits.

By the end of the session, students should be able to describe how Dingbats can support revision, explain different strategies for using them effectively, and evaluate which techniques best suit their personal learning style.
