This lesson contains:

• A starter ‘do it now’ that can be adapted to suit whatever you previously taught.
• An activity to study a classic Stalinist piece of poster propaganda and to analyse it as a group. You can also print this and have students annotate along with you.
• A main activity to study a series of 4 information cards with different pieces of information on. Students use this to complete a scale showing things that Stalin did to convince people to support him and things that Stalin did to force people to support him. This way, they get a spectrum of methods used to keep power.
• An extension to look at a video about the Gulags and study some sources about them, making notes about what we can learn from each.
• A plenary to summarise the main methods used by Stalin in controlling Russia.
