Do you want your students to engage and think originally about adaptions, natural selection and evolution?

How This Resource Works:

1.Scenario Exploration: Students review a provided Environmental Scenario List and select an environment that presents extreme conditions, such as flash floods, extreme temperatures, or scarcity of food.

1.Species Design: Using the Designing Organisms Worksheet, students brainstorm structural, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to address the survival pressures of the chosen environment. Students then sketch and label their species and write a justification for each adaptation.

3.Poster Creation: Students create a poster combining their drawing with written explanations about the adaptations and how they help the species survive in the harsh environment.

What’s Included:
-Teacher Instructions
-Environmental Scenario List (35 Options): (e.g., Scorching Desert, Frozen Tundra, Cave System)
-Designing Organisms Worksheet: A scaffold to help students brainstorm structural, physiological, and behavioral adaptations, along with space for them to sketch their species and justify their design choices.
-Post checklist for students
-Assessment rubric

Why Teachers Love It:
-Covers key biology curriculum outcomes related to natural selection, adaptations, and evolutionary principles.
-Fully scaffolded for all ability levels, with high-ability modifications available (e.g., combining multiple environmental pressures or including evolutionary pathways).
-Flexible and adaptable: Works as a full lesson, extension activity, or assessment task.
-No prep required, just print, distribute, and teach!
