Specification references covered: P2.27–P2.30 (measuring reaction time; stopping = thinking + braking distance; factors affecting stopping distance; factors affecting reaction time)

The stopping distances question is the most marks-dense factual recall section of CP2, and students consistently lose marks by giving the same factor twice or using vague language.

The Topic Mastery Sheet gives the exact 2-mark wording for the reaction time/thinking distance explanation, the road surface/braking distance explanation, and tables of all accepted factors for both. The mark scheme note that factors “must be different from each other” is explicitly flagged. The ruler drop test method with the t = √(2d/g) calculation is also included.

The Student Exam Practice Sheet (20 marks) includes: reaction time and thinking distance 2-mark question; two different reaction time factors; road surface braking distance explanation; stopping distance relationship; thinking vs braking distance distinction; thinking distance calculation ;why stopping distance increases with speed; reaction time measurement method; typical range; three braking distance factors; and one thinking distance improvement.
