Edexcel International A Level Chemistry Core Practical 16 lesson on preparation of aspirin with full method, exam questions and answers included PDF packs. All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 13 A2 level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 6 – WCH16/01, but it can also be used for Edexcel UK A level, since the practical is the same (core practical 12 in the UK A level)! All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question.

Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time.
Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slide 3 – recap quiz on practical synthesis in organic synthesis. Answers animate on the screen as you click
Slide 4 – aim of practical is presented to students (To perform and explain the reactions of acid anhydrides and to synthesise aspirin from 2-hydroxybenzoic acid)
Slide 5 – equipment list
Slide 6 – control measures for safety
Slide 7: method for the practical
Slides 8 - 10: results tables (print the hidden slides for the students)
Slides 11 - 24: this section unpicks some of the steps in the method in a bit more detail, explaining thoroughly some techniques or concepts which Edexcel frequently assume your students (or you!) know already! This will also help students with Paper 6 exam questions and understand why they are doing certain steps in the method. The recrystallisation of the aspirin using a mixture of ethanol and water is explained here
Slide 25 - 28: important notes on the practical, including a critique of other methods that can be used to make aspirin
Slide 29 – safety slide to be displayed during the practical
Slides 30 - 32: sample results (at least one group in your class will need these!)
Slides 33 - 35: evaluation questions. These are exam-style questions and students should complete these in their exercise books. The hidden slides are intended to be printed
Slides 36 - 37: answers to the evaluation questions for you to review with your students
