A complete Phase 3 phonics lesson teaching the ‘er’ phoneme, including GPC revision, differentiated tasks, CVC practice and sentence‑level application.

Full Description
This resource provides a full Phase 3 phonics lesson focused on teaching the ‘er’ phoneme and the tricky word ‘h±ð°ù’. It follows the Revisit – Teach – Practise – Apply structure and is ideal for whole‑class teaching, small‑group work or targeted intervention. Suitable for pupils working within Letters and Sounds Phase 3.

Revisit
Children revise previously taught GPCs:
s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss, j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure.

Teach
Introduce the new phoneme **er **with actions.

Tricky word focus: her.

Practise
Children practise reading real and pseudo words using Buried Treasure (PhonicsPlay link included).
Word list: her, hammer, letter, ladder, supper, dinner, better, summer, farmer, shorter, longer, powder.

Apply
Pupils read and discuss sentences containing the new phoneme:

I got a letter from a farmer.

My ladder was much longer than her ladder.

Get a hammer and bang in a nail.

**Differentiated Activities
★ Group game: Pumpkin Patch Splat using ‘er’ words.
★★ Partner activity: Roll‑and‑read ‘er’ words. Includes prompts for blending, segmenting and using words in sentences.
★★★ Independent writing: Pupils write their own sentences using ‘er’ words.
Extension: Include the tricky word her.

CVC Activity (TA‑led)
Oral blending and segmenting of CVC ‘pumpkin’ words.

Pumpkin Patch Splat game using fly swatters.

Writing CVC words on mini whiteboards with teacher modelling and self‑checking.

Modelled sentence using today’s CVC words (e.g. Zac and Vic sat in the red van.)
