Tell me more!
The goal of this lesson is to give students a positive first experience of playing rhythms in an ensemble setting. They’ll learn a simple samba-style piece using just paired quavers, crotchets and crotchet rests — no tricky syncopation or semiquavers. Students play rhythms through call & response, ostinatos, and imitation, sometimes as a whole class and sometimes in smaller groups.

The smoothie stand theme helps make each rhythm easy to learn and remember, while keeping the activity fun but not too childish. The samba can be taught in 15–25 minutes or extended into a full lesson with group swaps, performances, and the worksheet included.

This activity is completely no-prep, requires only your screen and any percussion instruments (samba drums, untuned percussion, bucket drums, or even just clapping/body percussion), and works just as well with large classes as with small groups.

This classroom samba is an ideal starting point for younger or less experienced students — balancing fun performance with the essential skill of rhythm reading. Other Classroom Sambas are available in my store, featuring more advanced rhythms.
