Find out how scientists classify living organisms and what makes a species in this free KS3 Biology worksheet — no preparation needed, just download and use. Perfect as a lesson starter, homework task, or quick revision activity for students aged 11-14.

Classification is the process of sorting organisms into groups based on their features, using seven levels from kingdom down to species. A species is defined as a group of organisms that can reproduce together to produce fertile offspring.

The worksheet contains three questions: a multiple choice question testing the definition of classification; a fill-in-the-blank exercise covering the seven classification levels and key vocabulary; and a table completion task where students classify the lion from kingdom to species. Total marks: 13. A full answer key is included.

Want more? The full 100-mark premium worksheet goes deeper into the definition of a species and fertile offspring, binomial naming rules and how to write scientific names correctly, and the five kingdoms of life with examples from each. A complete lesson bundle combining the full worksheet and extension activities is also available on the iNewittAll TES store.

The accompanying YouTube video is Google Classroom ready — simply copy the link directly into your Classroom assignment.
