P7 Class Charter – 5 Lesson Pack | UNCRC, Rights & Values

A complete 5-lesson Class Charter unit designed for upper primary/P7, taking pupils through the process of understanding children’s rights and using these to create a meaningful class charter together.

The lessons are designed to be interactive, discussion-based and pupil-led, with a mixture of collaborative, creative and practical activities.

What’s included:
Lesson 1 – From Global Problems to Children’s Rights
Pupils explore issues affecting children around the world, learn about the United Nations and are introduced to the UNCRC.
Lesson 2 – Understanding Our Rights
Pupils explore key UNCRC articles in more detail, making links between real-life situations and children’s rights.
Lesson 3 – Rights in Our Classroom
Pupils consider which rights are most relevant to their own classroom and begin exploring what these might look like in practice.
Lesson 4 – Linking Rights and Values
Pupils make connections between children’s rights, wellbeing and the values that shape their school community.
Lesson 5 – Creating Our Class Charter
Pupils work together to select key rights, agree how these will be respected in their classroom and creatively design their final Class Charter.
Please note:

This resource was created for use in a Scottish primary school. The second half of the unit includes reference to SHANARRI wellbeing indicators and some activities refer to individual school values. These sections can easily be adapted to suit your own school, setting or values.

The pack is ideal for the beginning of a new school year, particularly when establishing a new class community, expectations and a shared understanding of children’s rights.
