Coursework sounds easier than the exam. No time limit. Dictionaries allowed. Drafting permitted. But here’s what I learned the hard way – without a clear strategy, my students’ portfolios ended up worse than their timed writing. Too much padding. Generic vocabulary that could have been upgraded. And Assignment 1s that summarised the source text instead of arguing with it.

So I made this guide. It’s the structured, mark-scheme-aligned resource I now use to walk every student through the three coursework assignments. Aligned to the 0500 syllabus for 2027, 2028 and 2029.

What’s inside – assignment by assignment:

Assignment 1 – Argue, Discuss, Persuade (30 marks)

How to choose a source text with enough opinion to challenge (bias = marks)

Reading marks (15) vs. writing marks (15) – and why most candidates confuse them

Model paragraph annotated: agreeing, extending, and challenging the text

The difference between summarising (Level 3) and evaluating (Level 6)

Assignment 2 – Descriptive Writing (25 marks)

5-layer structural framework (wide → mid → close-up → internal → return)

The 500–800 word advantage: how to use extra space for depth, not padding

Vocabulary upgrade tables: replace generic words with precise alternatives

Self-assessment checklist for descriptive writing

Assignment 3 – Narrative Writing (25 marks)

“Narrow and deep” – the golden rule for 700-word stories

Structural frameworks: classic arc, in medias res, circular, retrospective

Characterisation beyond the obvious: contradictory details, habits, authentic dialogue

Model narrative opening annotated for technique

Plus:

Mark scheme level descriptors translated into plain English (Content & Structure / Style & Accuracy)

The “write-more-choose-best” strategy – why completing 4–5 pieces raises the final grade

Three-pass redrafting method (structural → paragraph-level → sentence/word)

Planning templates for all three assignments

Common errors that trigger moderation adjustments

Example titles for A1 (speech, letter, article, report) and A2/A3

Who is this for?

Teachers managing the coursework portfolio for the first time (or looking to raise moderated marks)

Students who need a structured, self-guided workbook for A1, A2, and A3

Tutors supporting portfolio development outside the classroom

A small ask: If this guide helps you and your students, please take two minutes to leave a review. It helps other teachers find resources that actually work – and I read every single one. Thank you!

Paper 1 (Reading), Paper 2 (Directed Writing and Composition), and Component 3 (Coursework Portfolio). Buy the bundle and save. What's inside the guides: Paper 1 – Reading (2 hours, 80 marks, 50% of IGCSE): Three reading passages with short-answer and structured questions. Question 1 (comprehension and summary) – how to select 15 key points without over-writing. Question 2 (short-answer questions) – what the command words actually mean (Give, Identify, What evidence, Explain). Question 3 (language analysis) – how to analyse word choice, imagery, and sentence structure without just "spotting" techniques. Question 4 (evaluation) – how to respond to a statement with a clear, supported personal response. Paper 2 – Directed Writing and Composition (2 hours, 80 marks, 50% of IGCSE): Section A (Directed Writing) – how to write a speech, letter, article, or report based on reading material. How to adapt tone, register, and format for audience and purpose. Section B (Composition) – choice of four descriptive or narrative prompts. How to structure a story (opening, conflict, resolution) or a description (overview → details → sensory language). Model answers for both sections with examiner commentary. Component 3 – Coursework Portfolio (50 marks, 50% of IGCSE – optional alternative to Paper 2): Three assignments: one informative/analytical, one imaginative/descriptive, one argumentative/persuasive. How to choose topics that allow for genuine depth. How to redraft effectively – what examiners look for in the final version. How to avoid the common moderation pitfalls (unbalanced portfolio, weak third piece, insufficient range). Mark scheme decoded for each assignment type. Command words decoded for every question – Give, Identify, What evidence, Explain, How does the writer, What impression, Summarise, Compare, Imagine you are, Write a speech/article/letter/report. Each with IGCSE-specific requirements and common misinterpretations. Students who misread command words lose marks. This stops that. Summary writing protocol – How to select points without copying whole sentences. How to paraphrase effectively. How to write a single developed paragraph (not bullet points) that earns full marks. Worked example with examiner commentary. Language analysis framework – Not just "the writer uses a metaphor." How to explain WHAT the metaphor shows, HOW it creates effect, and WHY the writer chose it. Sentence-by-sentence analysis of a passage. Vocabulary bank for analytical writing (conveys, suggests, implies, emphasises, contrasts, evokes). Directed writing format guide – Speech (opening address, signposting, rhetorical devices, closing). Letter (sender address, date, salutation, closing, signature). Article (headline, byline, subheadings, engaging opening). Report (title, terms of reference, numbered sections, recommendations). Each with annotated examples. Composition planning templates – For narrative: character, setting, conflict, structure (opening → development → climax → resolution). For descriptive: overview, sense details (sight, sound, smell, touch), figurative language, mood. How to avoid the "and then..." trap. Coursework portfolio guidance – How to write a commentary explaining your choices. How to reference sources correctly. What examiners mean by "original, well-crafted, and thoughtfully organised." Model portfolio extracts with marker commentary. 4-week revision plans for each paper – Daily schedules for reading comprehension, summary writing, language analysis, directed writing, and composition. Timed practice with self-marking against mark schemes. Everything follows the Cambridge 0500 syllabus for 2026–2028. No fluff. Just what earns marks in the exam.
