A series of activities in which students look at the journey of Danny, who has been injured when playing.

The journey outlines what happens to Danny and his “patient pathway”. A patient pathway is the ideal sequence of steps, treatments, and services a patient should experience for a specific condition, from diagnosis through to recovery or long-term management, ensuring quality, coordinated, and patient-centered care. It acts as a roadmap for both patients and healthcare teams, improving efficiency, standardizing care, and helping to manage complex conditions. In Danny’s case, the card sort outlines the ideal series of steps that Danny will experience (although we recognise that depending on the individual and their own unique injury this could vary).

In this task, students have to put the cards in order of who Danny sees and what they do to help him. They then watch the video to check their answers [they could stick them in their books at this point]. The class could then discuss what care Danny receives in the community (once he is discharged from hospital) and what other help he might need moving forwards.

I have used this final activity to talk about the mental health impacts too - maybe Danny is nervous about playing again, or anxious about being in the place he hurt his leg again. The students discussed ways that his friends could help him be comfortable, and what they could do to support him. We also discussed what mental health support might be available (e.g. speaking to a counsellor, friend, family member or teacher).
