AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

This lesson assesses the threat posed by Catholicism during the reign of Elizabeth I and encourages students to evaluate how serious Catholic opposition really was.

Students investigate key rebellions, missionary activity and government responses before reaching an overall judgement on the dangers Elizabeth faced.

The lesson begins with an analysis of the Northern Rebellion of 1569. Students explore whether the rebellion was mainly caused by opposition to the Religious Settlement or whether it was a broader Catholic challenge to Elizabeth’s authority. They examine the motives, events and consequences before assessing how serious the threat became.

Students then investigate the role of Seminary Priests and Jesuits who travelled to England in an attempt to spread Catholicism and reconvert the population. Through discussion and evidence analysis, students decide whether these priests had limited influence or posed a direct political and religious threat to Elizabeth’s rule.

Further tasks focus on the measures introduced by the government to deal with Catholic threats, allowing students to judge how effective and significant these responses were. The lesson also includes exam practice with guidance and support to help students build analytical and evaluative skills.

An enquiry question runs throughout the lesson to encourage progress and deeper understanding across the wider unit of work.
