AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to explore and debate the character, reputation and ‘virtues’ of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey during his time as chief minister to Henry VIII.

Students begin by examining a range of historical interpretations of Wolsey and deciding which view best reflects his personality, leadership and time in office. This encourages discussion, debate and critical thinking from the outset.

A variety of carefully selected sources and interpretations allow students to analyse differing historical opinions before reaching their own substantiated judgement on Wolsey’s historiography. Students are encouraged to justify their conclusions and present their ideas confidently in front of their peers.

Students then complete a source-based exam practice question focusing on the most convincing interpretation of Wolsey. A structured writing frame and mark scheme are included to support exam technique, analytical writing and independent learning.

The final part of the lesson uses a “Head, Heart, Bin and Bag” to encourage students to reflect on Wolsey’s achievements, failures and overall legacy in a creative and memorable way.

An enquiry question is introduced at the beginning of the lesson and revisited throughout to demonstrate progress in learning and understanding across the wider Tudor unit of work.
