Unit 1.2 — My School (Mi instituto) · Spanish

A full EPI unit (69 slides) on the topic of school, covering school type and location, facilities and rooms, subjects and opinions, the school day, extracurricular activities and conditional opinions for improvement. It runs the complete MARS EARS cycle, from modelling all the way through to spontaneous production and past-paper assessment, making it a near-complete teaching sequence rather than a single lesson.

Core language. Anchored on a rich sentence builder about “San Miguel,” a mixed school. Vocabulary covers school spaces (biblioteca, gimnasio, cantina, salón de actos, laboratorio, patio, cancha), facilities and objects (instalaciones, pizarra digital, ventanas, horario), descriptive adjectives (nuevo/antiguo, limpio/sucio, ancho/estrecho, ecológico, aburrido, entretenido), subjects (química, biología, dibujo, educación física), people and routine (alumno, profesor, deberes, jornada escolar, recreo), and key verbs and structures including the conditional (cambiaría, preferiría, me gustaría). The dedicated vocabulary slide groups roughly 80 items into seven themed sets.

Lesson 1 — Modelling. Quick translation on mini whiteboards, faulty echo, a run of “this or that?” discrimination tasks, spot-the-error sentences, probable/improbable sense-checking, a chunk-completion grid, and sentence-ordering.

Lessons 2 & 3 — Receptive processing (listening & reading). Listen-and-match sentence completion (LAM), a multiple-choice quiz, “find the Spanish for” scanning, full reading comprehension on Javier’s text, and several exam-style components: a match-the-people-to-adverts task, plus multiple GCSE/IGCSE-style reading texts (Elena, Marcos) with Spanish questions, mark allocations and full mark schemes.

Lessons 3 & 4 — Structured production. Narrow translation (sentence builder broken into three chunked sections, then a full version), and “un dado un lápiz” paired translation races.

Lessons 5 & 6 — Expansion / Autonomy. A dedicated grammar block of seven exercises with answer keys: indefinite articles, adjective agreement, ser vs estar, hay/tiene/está, present-tense conjugation, the conditional, and a topic translation.

Lessons 7 & 8 — Routinisation / Spontaneity. A 12-exchange parallel-text dialogue, the “¡Todos para uno!” team speaking game, and a set of open speaking questions for spontaneous use.

End of unit. Placeholders for reading, written and speaking past papers with mark schemes.

Pedagogy. Comprehensible input, heavy interleaving and discrimination work, scaffolded answer reveals, built-in differentiation (highlighted-mistake variants), spaced retrieval across the eight lessons, and progression from tightly modelled input through structured output to free production. Bilingual glosses throughout. This unit is notably more complete than Unit 1.1, carrying right through to exam-style assessment.
