A versatile KS3 conceptual art activity inspired by Bruce Nauman’s experimental approach to space, objects and composition.

Students create an experimental composition using a range of images, text, symbols, shapes, arrows and figures, experimenting with unusual placement and scale.

The activity develops understanding of composition, tension, scale, asymmetry, repetition and negative space.

Students are encouraged to challenge traditional layouts and create an artwork that communicates a clear idea or message.

The extension invites pupils to transform their design into a simple 3D installation using accessible classroom materials.

Ideal for KS3 Art, composition skills, conceptual art, cover lessons and creative projects.
