Black History Month Assembly - Wangari Maathai (PowerPoint + Speaker Notes)
Suitable for Primary School

Celebrate Black History Month 2026 through the theme of ‘Honouring Our Communities’ with this high-quality assembly. Professor Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize for her work on sustainable development. She founded the grassroots project The Green Belt Movement which has planted voer 15 million trees across Africa. She truly deserves to be celebrated for the impact she made in her community!

This high-quality resource includes:

  • A visually-appealing 10-slide PowerPoint explaining the story of how The Green Belt Movement began, as well as a slide on the background of Black History Month. There is also an age-appropriate animal themed video linked in which Wangari tells a short story about how small actions all add up.
  • A 509-word page of notes to help you present the PowerPoint.

Please note on slide 9 you will need to insert an image of Wangari Maathai yourself. I could not due to copyright reasons.

Everything is completely editable. This will produce an assembly of around 15 to 20 minutes depending on pace.
